The Isle of Man’s rich cultural heritage is celebrated through Culture Vannin's annual Reih Bleeaney Vanannan (Manannan’s Choice of the Year), the Island’s highest cultural honour. For 2025, this prestigious award has been presented to Annie Kissack, a dedicated champion of Manx language, music, and literature, whose lifelong contributions have helped to shape and preserve the cultural landscape of the Island.
Annie’s passion for Manx culture has influenced generations, spanning traditional and original music, choral arrangements, poetry, folklore, and education. A natural communicator, she shares her knowledge with enthusiasm, ensuring that the Manx language and artistic traditions remain vibrant and relevant. With an MA in Manx Studies, her deep understanding of the Island’s heritage informs her creative work and educational contributions.
As a child she was inspired by her teacher, Leslie Quilliam RBV, Annie’s journey into Manx culture began early. She participated in Manx youth movements and festivals, later becoming a key figure in inter-Celtic cultural exchanges. As a musician and singer, she has been integral to groups such as Perree Bane and Caarjyn Cooidjagh, while her musical arrangements and poetry have gained international recognition.
Annie’s commitment to education saw her play a vital role in the establishment of Manx language initiatives, including Mooinjer Veggey and Bunscoill Ghaelgagh, where she helped develop Manx-language musicals and teaching resources. As a poet and playwright, her work captures the essence of the Isle of Man’s landscapes, people, and identity.
As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Isle of Man recognises culture as a crucial element in sustaining a thriving and resilient community. Cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with the environment, shaping identity and strengthening a sense of place. By celebrating and preserving traditions such as those championed by Annie, the community of the Isle of Man ensures that future generations can continue to connect with their heritage in meaningful ways. The preservation and evolution of Manx language, music, and storytelling contribute to the Island’s distinctiveness, reinforcing the importance of cultural sustainability alongside environmental stewardship.
Annie’s impact is immeasurable, and she is most deserving of this honour. The award was presented at Barregarrow Methodist Chapel, with Annie nominating Mooinjer Veggey to receive a charitable donation, further reinforcing her dedication to nurturing Manx culture for future generations.
