This July, Culture Vannin will once again host Scoill Souree, a Manx Gaelic summer school for over 16s. Now in its third year, the summer school offers an engaging and immersive opportunity for learners of all levels to develop their Manx language skills.
Learning Manx is so much more than acquiring a language - it is about connecting with the island’s rich cultural fabric and ensuring that this integral part of Manx identity is carried forward.
Running from Monday 21st to Friday 25th July 2025, the courses coincide with the wonderful Yn Chruinnaght Celtic Gathering festival in Peel, a celebration of music, dance, and language. Classes will take place in Peel and St John’s, led by experienced tutors Ruth Keggin Gell, Paul Rogers, and Jamys O’Meara. Each course is designed to be interactive and accessible, ensuring learners can progress in a supportive environment.
Five different courses will be available, catering to a range of abilities:
Gaelg Keim 1a (Level 1a) – for complete beginners
Gaelg Keim 1b (Level 1b) – for those with basic knowledge
Gaelg Keim 2a (Level 2a) – lower intermediate level
Gaelg Keim 2b (Level 2b) – continuation from Level 2a
Gaelg Keim 3a (Level 3a) – for those with prior experience in Levels 1 and 2
Each course costs £125, including tuition, learning materials, and refreshments. Spaces are limited, and early booking is essential.
Language is at the heart of culture, identity, and heritage, enhancing our feeling of belonging and sense of place. Biosphere Isle of Man is proud to support initiatives that safeguard and celebrate Manx culture. By learning and using Manx, participants contribute to its recognition on a broader scale, ensuring Manx Gaelic continues to thrive for generations to come and that our unique linguistic heritage is celebrated.
