Water, or ushtey (pronounced USH-teh) in Manx Gaelic, is the lifeblood of our planet, sustaining people, wildlife, and ecosystems. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Isle of Man recognises the importance of protecting this invaluable resource, to ensure a healthy and sustainable future for all.
World Water Day is held annually on 22nd March and is a time to reflect on the role water plays in our daily lives, from the streams and reservoirs that supply our homes to the marine environments that surround our beautiful Island. Clean, accessible water is essential for humans and the rest of nature, supporting habitats, agriculture, and our own well-being. Protecting water quality and reducing waste is crucial in maintaining the balance of our natural world.
One way we can all make a difference is by reducing single-use plastic and bottled water. Refill Isle of Man, is an initiative by City to Sea and run by Biosphere Isle of Man in partnership with Manx Utilities, who supply the island’s tap water.
Refill makes it easier for people to access free drinking water on the go, by providing a network of Refill Stations across the island, from cafés and shops to museums and heritage sites. By carrying a reusable water bottle and refilling it at participating locations, we can cut down on plastic pollution and protect our natural environment, all while enjoying our fresh Manx tap water.
We encourage everyone to take a simple yet impactful action – carry to a reusable bottle when commuting, exploring nature, or simply out and about.
Get involved by downloading the free Refill App, or simply keep your eyes peeled for the distinctive blue sticker displayed by the island’s Refill Stations. Every refill is a step towards a cleaner, healthier island and planet.
Let’s celebrate the value of water and commit to preserving it. Together, we can make a difference for our Island’s environment and beyond.
