The UK National Commission for UNESCO (UKNC) is inviting applications for three pro bono Non-Executive Directors (NEDs) to provide expert advice in the fields of Education, Natural Sciences, and Communication & Information. The UKNC oversees UNESCO designated sites in the UK and Crown Dependencies, including the Isle of Man Biosphere Reserve.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the UK’s engagement with UNESCO and its global network, collaborating with UNESCO Member States, the UK government, and UNESCO-designated sites across the world.
The NEDs will play a pivotal role in advancing the vision and objectives of the UKNC, which supports UNESCO’s work across various areas, including Education, Sustainable Development, Biosphere Reserves, and the protection of Freedom of Expression. NEDs will offer expert, independent advice to both UK and devolved governments on UNESCO-related matters, guide institutions and individuals in the UK, its Overseas Territories, and Crown Dependencies on accessing UNESCO accreditation, and oversee externally funded projects within their areas of expertise.
Key areas of activity include UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, Global Geoparks, Global Education Monitoring Reports, and the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), among others. Non-Executive Directors will also contribute to the UKNC’s Strategy 2022-29, ensuring the organisation operates within legal and financial guidelines and advocating for effective policies and practices.
This role offers a chance to work alongside other NEDs and the UKNC Secretariat, supporting the UK’s UNESCO sites and initiatives and helping UNESCO become more institutionally effective.
Applications are open for individuals with relevant expertise, and more information about the roles and their expectations can be found on this page.
